Electrotherapy

ElectrotherapyElectrotherapy (Electric stim, muscle stim, TENS) is the use of electricity for medical treatment. During an electrotherapy session, small electrodes are placed on either side of the location being treated. An electric current will pass through the skin, stimulating nerves and tissues underneath. While the current is on, the patient feels a "tingly" or "buzzing" sensation, and may feel some twitching of the underlying musculature.

Electrotherapy may be effective for:

  • Pain relief
  • Relief of muscle spasm
  • Muscle re-education and strengthening after long periods of disuse (casting)
  • Improvement of joint mobility
  • Increasing blood flow
